ATN Universities applauds indexation move to reduce student debt

06 May 2024

Changes by the Federal Government to the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) will be a shot in the arm for people paying off a student debt and those struggling with cost-of-living pressures, according to the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN).

ATN Executive Director (Interim), Frank Coletta, says the announcement ahead of the May 14 Budget that the process of indexation will be altered, comes as welcome relief to those with a student loan.

“ATN has long championed the importance of equity and access leading to student success and this change to HELP debts is a significant step forward,” he said.

“The Universities Accord process and the expert panel’s recommendations set a clear path forward with the proposal of game-changing reforms and it is extremely pleasing that calls to modernise the student loans system have been heard. Any change which has, at its heart, the student experience and leads to a fairer, more equitable system should be applauded.”
