ATEC Interim Statement of Strategic Priorities a welcome step toward embedding positive reform

11 May 2026

The Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN Universities) welcomes the release by the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC) of its Interim Statement of Strategic Priorities. It is an important step toward a more outcomes-focused higher education system.

The priorities look to better align Australia’s universities with national skills and research needs. Securing Australia’s sovereign capability and strengthening our national research output is the overarching objective.

As a network of universities with the largest proportion of applied research partnerships with industry, the ATN’s institutions are well-placed to support the delivery of ATEC’s priorities, particularly around research translation and workforce preparedness.

Quotes attributable to ATN Universities Executive Director Dr Andy Marks:

“ATN universities look forward to working with the ATEC on this important first step in embedding the important contribution we make in the national interest.”

“Getting on the same page about the scope, impact, and aims of universities is the right approach for all concerned. As Australia’s most ‘hands-on’ institutions, ATN Universities are committed to a shared trajectory with our community, industry, and government partners. This ATEC mechanism will help us to do that.”

“We recognise that an improved understanding of the shared community, industry and government expectations of the impact and objectives of the ATN universities is a positive step for all stakeholders.”
