The Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN Universities) thanks Chair Professor Alex Zelinsky AO for his leadership and contribution to the network following his announcement that he will retire as Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Newcastle in February 2027.
Professor Zelinsky has made an extraordinary contribution to Newcastle and the wider region. He has also served as the Chair of the ATN since April 2025, providing exceptional leadership for the network during a period of significant reform across Australia’s universities.
ATN Universities Executive Director Dr Andy Marks thanked Professor Zelinsky for his contribution to ATN and its member universities.
“Alex has been a steadfast and highly influential champion of the ATN and our collective advocacy, both as a member of our board and in his role as our Chair,” he said.
“The ATN has benefited considerably from Alex’s additional experience as a successful entrepreneur, Chief Defence Scientist, and as a highly regarded computer scientist, systems engineer, and roboticist.”
“He has been deeply committed to demonstrating the value of universities as more than institutions for learning, but also as creators of knowledge, drivers of societal change, and beacons of progress that benefit communities and the entire nation.”
“His leadership, energy and collaboration have been invaluable to ATN, and I have deeply valued his advice, encouragement, and partnership as Chair.”
“On behalf of ATN Universities, I acknowledge Alex’s outstanding contribution over a career of service in education, research and innovation. I look forward to the many positive outcomes we will achieve together with Alex at the ATN through to February 2027.”
