ATN Universities welcomes ATEC First Nations Commissioner

06 August 2026

ATN Universities is pleased to welcome Professor Mark Rose AM as the newly appointed Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC) First Nations Commissioner.

ATN Universities has a deep commitment to supporting First Nations people being at the heart of Australia’s higher education system. We look forward to working alongside Professor Rose to create a fairer higher education system where First Nations voices and perspectives are amplified across the tertiary sector. Professor Rose’s former role as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Strategy and Innovation at ATN member university Deakin, provides a strong foundation for his appointment within ATEC.

ATN Universities Executive Director Dr Andy Marks said that Professor Rose’s appointment is a positive step for inclusivity and opportunity in Australia’s higher education landscape.

“Professor Rose is a trusted colleague of ATN Universities, and I have no doubt that his voice within the ATEC will help to facilitate stronger connections between higher education and First Nations people,” Dr Marks said.

“Opportunity and access are key priorities for our network. ATN Universities educates 16% of all Australia’s First Nations students, and we want the doors of opportunity to be open to many more, and for participation to be not just encouraged, but easily accessible and practical. Professor Rose and the ATEC can be instrumental in widening the window for First Nations people in the university sector, and ATN stand ready to collaborate and support them.”
