The Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN Universities) welcomes the appointment of Professor Tom Calma AO and the Hon Fiona Nash as the new interim commissioners of the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC).
ATN Universities Chair Professor Alex Zelinsky AO said that Professor Calma and Ms Nash are strong selections at this crucial formative phase in the establishment of the ATEC.
“Professor Tom Calma AO and the Hon Fiona Nash understand the vital economic and social contribution the Australian higher education sector makes. They bring particular awareness of that impact in regional areas and among underrepresented groups. I am confident they will bring the objectives of the Accord reforms to bear where they are needed most.”
ATN Universities Executive Director Dr Andy Marks has commended Education Minister Jason Clare on the strong appointments.
“These appointments affirm Minister Clare is committed to the equity objectives at the core of the Universities Accord reform package,” said Dr Marks.
“Professor Calma brings deep experience in human rights and social justice to the ATEC, making him uniquely suited to help shape a fairer higher education system.”
“As a member of the Universities Accord Panel, Fiona Nash has a clear understanding of the crucial role the ATEC will perform in intensifying the regional strengths of our system.”
ATN Universities look forward to working alongside Professor Calma and Ms Nash, as well as acting Chief Commissioner Professor Barney Glover AO in pursuing a stronger future for Australia’s skills, training, and research ecosystem.
