National AI Plan a strong step for Australia’s workforce future

02 December 2025

ATN Universities welcomes the Government’s National AI Plan as a significant step toward strengthening Australia’s economic productivity and ensuring safe, secure and responsible AI adoption.

“The Government’s National AI Plan sets an important path to scaling AI capability while putting the benefits for communities and our workers squarely at the centre – a human-centred approach that is essential to building public confidence,” ATN Executive Director Professor Anderson said.

“Our 2025 National Symposium on Generative AI and Graduate Employability highlighted the need for training pathways so that workers can confidently and effectively adopt AI technology. As Australia’s most industry-engaged universities, ATN’s members are well-positioned to help build a productive, AI-enabled future workforce.”

ATN also welcomes the announcement of the AI Accelerator, a CRC funding round specifically for AI-focused projects. “The AI Accelerator is an exciting opportunity for some of our brightest minds across academia and industry to translate ideas into impactful solutions.” Professor Anderson said.

“ATN’s member universities teach 27% of Australia’s IT students and do extraordinary work in AI development and AI policy. We need look no further than divisions such as UTS’ Human Technology Institute to see that some of our most talented minds are deeply invested in ensuring that advanced technology like AI is integrated into our lives, communities and workforces responsibly and with practical applications that can benefit our economy and sovereign capability for generations.”

“We look forward to working alongside Government as the National AI Plan and the National AI Accelerator program are further rolled out.”
