ATN UNIVERSITIES KEY TO AUSTRALIA MEETING 2030 TECH JOBS TARGET

The Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN) is pleased the Tech Council of Australia (TCA) digital employment report has revealed that the national tech workforce has grown eight per cent in the past year.
ATN Executive Director, Luke Sheehy, said ATN universities are at the forefront of delivering many of the graduates required to help meet the Federal Government’s 2030 target of 1.2 million technology-related jobs.
“The TCA report reveals that Australia is on track regarding our ever-increasing demand for skilled workers, in areas like cyber security or data analysis, and ATN universities will continue to best prepare students for entry into this crucial workforce,” Mr Sheehy said.
“The Government and Minister for Industry and Science, the Hon. Ed Husic, have clearly demonstrated their commitment to the tech space and they know continued growth is crucial to the national economy. Innovation and the university sector are an important piece of the future employment puzzle which will ensure that more Australians are trained for current roles and the jobs of the future.”
The TCA revealed that the overall tech workforce increased to 935,000 compared to 865,000 a year ago and that 10,500 jobs were added in the first quarter of 2023.
The TCA recently revealed to the ATN Perspectives podcast that in order to meet the 2030 goal, key target areas would include:
• 80,000 graduates from university or VET joining tech as their first job
• 70,000 workers as a result of skilled migration; and,
• 300,000 through reskilling and switching career
“Kate Pounder from the TCA has told us that about two-thirds of the people doing an ICT degree in Australia are international students, and helping the Government deliver this target will provide a post-study pathway for those who want to stay here and make use of their great knowledge and skills,” Mr Sheehy concluded.
