The Australian Technology Network (ATN) praised the outcome of the Independent Review of the Defence Trade Controls Act, as a sensible and balanced approach to both national security and innovation.

The Chair of the ATN, Professor Attila Brungs welcomed the outcome and said universities have for many years worked positively and collaboratively with Defence to ensure the effectiveness of the Defence Trades Controls Act (DTCA). Universities are committed to working with government and industry to continue to ensure the DTCA meets the nation’s needs.

“As technology universities, we are very pleased to see the review recommend the continuation of the current, rigorous regime around technology in the context of critical world-class, international research collaborations.

“With sensible safeguards, researchers can continue to collaborate with innovators across the globe to bring to Australia new technology breakthroughs for better outcomes for our society.”

The ATN welcomes the Government’s response and the planned establishment of a working party to continue to work on protection of national security and internationally world class innovation collaborations.
