The Australian Technology Network is focussed on research in partnership with industry and the professions which has an impact and makes a difference in the communities within which we operate. Together the ATN spends some $100 million on research each year. For every start-up company it injects $90 million of research money, a rate more efficient than the US rate of $100 million. The ATN has a significantly higher growth rate in Australian Research Council funding than other universities.
ATN universities are leaders in opening up new research fields and disciplines such as in the creative industries, and in bringing together diverse areas of academic research to work on practical problems.
The ATN Research and Innovation Working Groups ensures that the ATN not only takes advantage of the national innovation agenda but assumes a leadership role in driving it.
Its core objectives are:
The ATN is particularly active in the research area, and therefore
maintains two working groups, ATN P/DVCs Research, and ATN Research Directors.

The ATN-University of Waterloo Researcher Exchange Program was established in 2009 to to provide ATN and UW researchers with incentives to build collaboration in areas of mutual strategic interest.
The Program will provide support for researcher exchange between universities of the ATN and the University of Waterloo (Ontario) to undertake a period of research activity aligned with REP priority areas.
The priority areas identified for 2010 are: renewable energy, environment, climate change, water, health, sustainable engineering and nanotechnology. Other areas will be considered if there is a demonstrated rationale for collaboration.
The Program provides funding for travel, accommodation, living and other research costs associated with proposed exchanges and will normally involve the home institution paying travel costs and the host institution covering in-country costs.
Successful applications will involve exchange visits between Canada and Australia of up to 2 months.
First round applications for the project funding period commencing July 1st, 2010 through to December 31st, 2010 have now closed.

Applicants will be informed of outcomes by May 31st, 2010
If you have any queries, please contact Emeritus Professor Neil Furlong neil.furlong@rmit.edu.au
Could you please clarify the number of ATN universities that should be involved in a funding application?
The intent of the program is to promote as wide collaboration between members of the network as possible, however it is recognised that there may be a number of worthwhile projects that do not include three ATN members. Whilst involvement from three (or more) ATN members is strongly encouraged, this does not preclude applications involving researchers from fewer universities.
When determining which applications will be funded, the number of universities involved in the project may be used as a differentiating factor between proposals that otherwise have similar merit.
What is meant by "other research costs associated with the proposed exchange of researchers"?
These might include travel/medical insurances, research materials
(including shipping), access costs/consumables for specialist
infrastructure.
Each Applicant will need to briefly outline any budget allocation for such
costs against their relevance/necessity for the proposed researcher
exchanges to achieve their aims, and such costs will be capped at a maximum
of $2,000 for any application.
Can adjunct staff apply under the program?
Adjunct staff may be involved in the program, but should comprise part of a research team where key researchers are employed by the university.
