Biography

Dr. Yin Xiao is a Biomedical Scientist, Dentist and Associate Professor of Medical Engineering at Queensland University of Technology. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate education in Wuhan University (1986 and 1991) and University of Queensland (2000). He has been awarded several fellowships and promoted to Associate Professor in 2005. As a leader of the Bone Tissue Engineering group within the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, he has built up an active research programme that focuses on finding solutions to bone defect healing, bone regeneration, stem cell selection and the treatment of osteoarthritis. In the past 8 years, he has made several discoveries and advances in the fields of 3-dimensional cell culture, biomaterials modification for cell delivery, stem cell characterization, and bone regeneration. In the past five years, he has attracted more than $2 million research funding in supproting his research activities. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University and Fujian Medical University.

Research Interests

Biomaterials with nano-structure for growth factor delivery and stem cell based therapy.

We are aiming to develop biomaterials for bone repair and regeneration in the field of dentistry and orthopaedic research. The nano-structure of the biomaterials under developing in our group will facilitate drug loading and controllable release, neovascularisation (blood vessel formation in newly formed tissues), enhanced mechanical strength, as well as controllable degradation and tissue growth. We have extensive experience with well-established laboratory set-up in stem cell biology, hard tissue development biology, and animal models for the in vitro and in vivo testing of biomaterials.
